Our Vision

At Siyakholwa, our unwavering focus and deep-rooted passion centre on the upliftment of marginalised and disadvantaged communities in South Africa.

While each of our programmes has its unique vision, they are united by a shared corporate mission and a steadfast commitment to a common set of values.  Through this unity of purpose, we strive to create lasting and meaningful change, making a positive impact in the lives of those who need it most.  Together, we work towards a future where every individual in our beloved South Africa can thrive and fulfil their potential.

Our Mission

Our mission is to equip individuals with the tools and resources they need to seize opportunities and break free from the cycle of poverty and unemployment.  Our guiding motto, “Building Stronger Communities”, encapsulates our commitment to fostering resilience and self-reliance amongst those we serve.  Through our various initiatives, we strive to upliftment and empower communities, catalysing positive change that transcends borders and transforms lives.

Our Story

The story of Brian and Jeri du Plessis, the founders of Siyakholwa, is a remarkable tale of miracles and unwavering perseverance.

In 1997, Brian du Plessis retired from Barlow Rand, and together with his wife, Jeri, made the courageous decision to sell their home and nearly all their possessions in Krugersdorp, South Africa.  With their trusty old caravan in tow, they embarked on a mission to find a destitute community in need of their service.  After exploring various areas, they eventually settled in Keiskammahoek where they remained ever since.

Upon arriving in Keiskammahoek, Brian and Jeri faced numerous challenges and uncertainties, often questioning whether their vision of serving communities in need was indeed part of a divine plan.  Their caravan found its place in an abandoned milk shed, serving as their humble abode.

Undeterred by setbacks, they persisted and learned from their experiences

They encountered obstacles such as growing cabbages without a viable market, but they persevered, slowly implementing projects aimed at uplifting the impoverished residents of their newfound community.

With a steadfast focus on empowering individuals, Brian and Jeri offered practical training in agriculture and basic repairs.  Their tireless efforts did not go unnoticed, as Siyakholwa began to garner attention and support from both government entities and corporations.  Collaborations were forged, leading to an expanding network of assistance for those seeking to break free from the chains of poverty.

The projects initiated by Siyakholwa have been nothing short of remarkable

Each completed task further bolstered their credibility, resulting in greater opportunities for the organisation.  Today, Siyakholwa boasts a workforce of over 7,000 individuals across multiple locations, all undergoing training in valuable skills for gainful employment and entrepreneurship.

We wish to honour the memory of our dear co-founder, Brian, who has passed away.  Jeri, our beloved co-founder, has relocated to Johannesburg, where she finds immense pleasure in her new role as grandparent.

We would like to express our deep gratitude for their unwavering dedication over the years.  Their journey has been guided by a Higher Power, and they always stressed that their story is not about them but about a greater mission.  They considered themselves instruments that helped Siyakholwa soar, and they were delighted to witness the organisation’s growing impact on countless lives and communities.

We are committed to continuing their legacy and the important work they started.

Together, let us join hands and build foundations of stronger communities where individuals are uplifted, connected, and empowered to make a meaningful impact in their lives, and the lives of others.
