Scope of project: Implement Community Work Programme in 6 sites with 5100 Participants in the Eastern Cape (Amahlathi, Camdeboo, Ikwezi, Makana, Somerset East, Sundays River)
>Currently, 5100 people with the greatest need are employed.
>Employment is limited between 8-20 days a month depending on a person’s level of skill.
> Workers are encouraged to take on other work when not part of the foundation’s programme.
> Each village has formed a committee. The steering committee helps decide what projects they would like to get involved in. Key to this decision was the benefit to the village.
>One supervisor is in charge of a village’s workers. Supervisors report to the chairmen of the villages. These chairmen meet with the foundation every four months.
>The supervisors report twice a month on all aspects of their village’s programme.
>They also submit attendance records.
>The foundation has a solid relationship with the local municipalities, communities, Councillors and Bisho Local Government and Traditional Affairs who are in charge of the programme from a provincial level.
>Partnerships have been established with the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, Wits and Cape Town University, Master Artisan Academy, Bountiful Grains, and BrainBoosters that assist the community with various training, mentoring and research.
Employment and skills development
Food and Nutrition Security Support
- >Carried out in partnership with Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University and Bountiful Grains.
- > Supervisors and Participants are trained in compost piles and vegetable gardens.
- > Compost piles and vegetable gardens are planted in schools, crèches, hospitals, orphanages, old age homes.
- > Communities are trained to plant without ploughing and chemicals to ensure sustainability.
- > Fruit tree planting has also been a successful intervention. Peach, citrus and other fruit trees have been planted. Women have been trained in jam-making and bottling.
- > The programme has also introduced a beekeeping project with the goal of helping people start a honey business.
- Environmental Programmes
- > Partnership with Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University and Bountiful Grains for the planting of “Vetiver grass” for preventative conservation practice & the building of “Stone check dams” for donga reclamation.
- > A nursery has been established to grow out Vetiver plants of the order of 10,000 plants per year for stocking new areas.
- > This project is a labour intensive practice & produces a significant benefit to communal lands through conservation of soil, water and nutrients.
- > Removal of wattle especially around water ways.
- > A variety of services like painting, fencing, and repairs to municipality buildings, police stations, hospitals etc are done.
- >Some villages are repairing or constructing mud and wattle crèches. A new brick and mortar crèche was built in June 2014 for a Keiskammahoek community.
- >Some villages have cleaned and/or constructed dams, fixed/constructed bridges; fixed and painted schools
- >A community hall was completely refurbished by community members through the programme.
- >Cleaning and Maintenance at SS Gida Hospital
Support to Schools
- >Community Work Programme participants are also involved in refurbishing school furniture at schools within the area. They have currently completed over 3056 desks, 2444 benches, and 622 chairs.
- >CWP teacher assistants are running a life skills programme in 50 schools in Keiskammahoek that addresses teenage pregnancy, absenteeism, and school drop outs. Over 3000 learners have received training in a reproductive& puberty education programme.
- >Unemployed matric level young people are employed as Teacher assistants in schools.
- >Meals are prepared and laundry is done for children who are in a home where there are no parents.
- >Schools are cleaned.
- >Trained mature ladies provide social services to children and others. These services include HIV/Aids support, handling abuse and social grant application assistance.
- >Compost piles and nutrition gardens are put into schools and crèches
- >Fencing is done where necessary
- >Water tanks have been installed at crèches and schools
- >The grass is cut at schools
- >Security is supplied
Urban renewal activities
- >Tree planting has been carried out in some areas. Landscaping, clearing and cleaning of open public spaces, repairing of pot holes on community roads, clearing of blocked culverts in villages
- >Participants have also been involved in bush clearing in order to improve security for the villagers.
Home-based care and auxiliary care services
- >Cooking and cleaning in vulnerable households
- >Programme for orphans and child-headed households, and after-school programmes
>The programme is also trains mature ladies to provide social services to children and others. These services include HIV/Aids support, handling abuse and identification and social grant application assistance.
>Community members have also been involved in bush clearing in order to improve security for the villagers. They are also involved in fixing community roads.
>Each village sent a member to be trained in first aid and was given a first aid kit.
>A number of people from each of the villages received safety and security training.
